Pearls are one of the natural wonders of the world. My advise when it comes to pearls is to buy the best you can afford. Pearls are not as good an investment as diamonds however this is changing. It is therefore better to buy an excellent set that you will be happy with forever.
Salt Water or Freshwater?
Whilst freshwater peatls can certainly be a lovely addition to anyone’s jewellery box, saltwater pearls are the ones to truly covet. Freshwater pearls will only ever be a fraction of the price of saltwater pearls. This is due to the longer harvesting time and a simple case of supply and demand economics.
Freshwater pearls are great as a fashion piece however saltwater pearls are the heirloom grade pearls. The best saltwater pearls to buy are as round as possible and over the 10mm size. Most saltwater pearls available will be cultured. Cultured peals simply means the oyster has had a core or nucleaus planted in the oyster to start the pearl creation process. A natural strand of saltwater pearls would be over a million dollars. Cultured pealrs are fine but always go for a saltwater pearls over freshwater pearls. It is much better to go for a non brand name string of saltwater pearls instead of a branded set of freshwater pearls.
A quality saltwater pearl necklace will retail for over US$10,000. Just as with diamonds – get an independent valuation from a pearl valuer.
