“It is very distinctive, it is very stylish – it is very Louis Vuitton… wherever you go in the world you will see people carrying the distinctive Louis Vuitton brand… whether it is a little bag or a huge suitcase.  It talks of distinction and taste” – Cherie Blair at the London Louis Vuitton New Bond Street Maison Opening.

Watches - What it is all about

What it is all about......

I was talking to a family member a few days ago and he said to me .... "you sell used watches...." My answer was no..... I sell dreams.....I sell miniature works of art.

A wristwatch is so much more than an instrument to tell the time.  A wristwatch is one of the few possessions that will be with you through good and bad times...... marriage, children, the first home, divorce, after the wife takes everything from the divorce, a car accident.....a lotto win.....when that sexy brunette said yes to ?!@#!?

A watch is one of the few items we own in our life that goes through everything......

There is a fantastic advertisement for the German jewellery store, Wempe..... it says...."You have big plans for your life.  Treat yourself to an advance."  Then it displays a US$25,000- Lange 1 wristwatch.

Since a watch is such an intimate piece do you want your watch to be a $10- petrol station purchase? ..... do you want to leave your kids a piece of $10 plastic for them to remember you by......??? I have meet many people who own a handed down wristwatch..... all these people ....no matter how expensive or cheap the watch was .....proudly say this was my dad's,....this was my favorite uncle's timepiece.....  Do you want your kids to remember you by a piece of 20 cent plastic?

Now a watch does not have to be an extravagant waste of money..... infact it can be a prudent investment.  At 18 I bought my first high value wristwatch.  It was a Steel Rolex Explorer I paid US$1100- for wholesale from a client who owned a jewellery store.  Suffice to
say I worn that watch for years...... then I sold it for US$6500- 8 years later  ...TODAY that same watch would fetch over US$10,000- in the Japanese market.......

Now I had a bit of luck on my side,.... as that particular model went through the roof in popularity..... However if you buy a second hand watch and take care of it YOU WILL NEVER LOSE YOUR MONEY......  The secret is to purchase your watch from a second hand watch dealer like our self..... take good care of your purchase and simply enjoy the watch!

Quartz, Automatic, or Mechanical...... what is the difference.???

A quartz watch is a piece that is powered by a battery.  These are the most accurate watches available....however many people feel they are computerized devices with no real heart or soul.  High end makers have alot of quartz pieces.  Personally I love quartz!!!! .... If you buy a high end brand - what is to stop it being treasured,...... My wife currently has a Cartier Baignoire which is 18K solid gold and Quartz...... she would kill me if I even thought about the S WORD!!!!!!

Automatic - This is a watch that is powered by simply wearing the watch.  A great idea..... the most famous automatic watch would have to be the Rolex DateJust...... Automatics have ridden out the quartz phase and are today the most sought after pieces...... A miniature work of art!!!!!  Powered by simply enjoying and wearing the piece!

Mechanical/Manual Wind - Although the term mechanical can also be applied to automatics it is usually reserved for manual wind pieces.  These piece require the wearer to wind them up before use.  Often they will last 1-3 days before requiring winding again.....  This is what the traditionalists love... Manual wind allows the movement to be super thin..... one of my favorite watches - the Cartier 18K Solid Gold Louis Cartier Tank uses a manual wind movement.  Although the trend today is for OVERSIZE watches, the definition of high class watch making was getting the watch as thin as possible.  Hence the reason the Patek Calatrava 3919 is so thin.....  The only movement as thin as Manual wind is quartz.
